Hi there, I have a penpal from the Budaburam Refugee camp and was just wanting to know if the emails are legitimate as i was unsure if they have internet access on a regular basis? I would love to help in even a small way as i really feel for all refugees. I don’t have much money myself though.
If you don’t mind i would like to know about the internet in Ghana,
    Warm Regards

I haven’t been there in about a year and a half. When I was there, there were at least 3 different internet cafes on the camp or nearby. It’s certainly possible that the emails are legitimate. I’d guess the camp is quite a bit smaller than it used to be since the war has ended.

I also have an epal at this refugee camp. I was curious about the validity of internet messages originating from there.

I’m not sure what you mean. If someone says they’re from there, I’m sure they are. You could travel there to meet them in person, if you like. How do you ever know if anyone is being honest with you about anything?

hi, as I said on my previous comment sheet, I think u are doing a brilliant job, I , too receive paltalk communication usually on a daily basis, currently I am finding out how I can sponsor these people to Australia, it seems most people are warry as to the validity of the people we talk to and probably there are some scammers, but I will obviously have to confirm this sooner rather than later, when I communicate with my member of Parliament here in Australia

I’m not sure what it means, validity. These people are clearly valid human beings. And they’re refugees. And? And what? What are you trying to verify?

I want to know their life’s background. I want to validate what they’ve telling me

It’s always important to try to verify that the person you are communicating with via email or snailmail is “legitimate”. I was in the Buduburam Camp in October for about 10 days and will return there again soon. There are between 50,000-70,000 people in the camp, according to latest statistics. One of the major problems, according to recent reports, is that since the civil war in Liberia “ended?” the people of the BC are no longer eligible for re-location to many countries, including the USA—or it has become extremely difficult. Being reunited back into Liberia would be wonderful, but there is alot to be accomplished before this can happen. There are many wounded hearts and souls, and many destroyed homes and businesses. Many people have nothing to go back to, and many still have “enemies” there. There were many atrocities committed in the civil war and much reconciliation that has to take place. Also, many of the people in the camp have been there for 10+ years! They have friends and perhaps family outside the camp. Many have grown old now in the camp.
For many of the women, girls and children the only hope they have comes from the outside world. These people are very courageous and industrious. There are businesses that they have established, such as internet cafes and food and produce “shops”. Don’t get me wrong, these are small, and the conditions there are very poor. Sanitation is poor. The schools there are poor or basically non-existent. But the people are survivors. They are awesome. If you would like to make a donation to a particular person there, I can perhaps assist you in verifying their identity. I have a ministry team in the area of the camp who work daily in the camp. Feel free to visit my website. Please note: I do not send financial assistance to individuals who contact me through the internet. I get many requests for aid from all over Africa and I work through the team I have on the ground in the country. So, please do not contact me for assistance. If you are in the camp, you should already know how to contact our ministry team.

Many people do not realize: Liberia, which means “land of the free,” was founded by free African-Americans and freed slaves from the United States in 1820. An initial group of 86 immigrants, who came to be called Americo-Liberians, first arrived in Liberia and established a settlement in Christopolis (now Monrovia, named after U.S. President James Monroe) on February 6, 1820. AT present only about 5% of the population remains Americo-Liberian.

I hope this helps. I fully want you to understand that I support the good people of the Buduburam Refugee Camp–and if you have the heart to donate on a regular basis to help feed a family, it would be wonderful. 100% of any funding would go directly to the person or family in the camp that you choose to help. I am only offering to be a liason.
