admin note about trackback
December 10, 2005 at 11:08 am | In admin |WordPress seems to use a non-interoperable standard called pingback. This means auto-trackback only works between WordPress blogs (like Michael or Doug, both of whom I’ve already tested, or Diana).
For other blogs, we have to manaually put their trackback address underneath the post, which seems to work [1] [2]. Michael and Doug had a problem tracking back between their blogs. I’m hoping that this post helps them, except that maybe it won’t, because I can’t seem to find the trackback URI for a WordPress post. Is it just the post address? I’ll see if I can find out.
update: The trackback URI for this post is: http://tedernst.com/wp/wp-trackback.php?p=318 (will vary depending your your WordPress setup. I was able to modify my php files to include some code to display the trackback URI whenever someone is looking at the comments. I can’t figure out how to write that code here, so email me if you’re interested.

Ted–
Thanks. So what you’re saying is that we need to use the “send trackbacks to” thing in the “Advanced” section below the post, and not just put a link in the body of the post, right?
The URI for a post can be found by hovering over or clicking on the title of the post.
How did you find this out? Have you asked anything about it on the Wordpress bulletin board site?
:- Doug.

Doug, yes, you have to use the advanced section and put in the trackback URI in addition to putting the address for the link in the body of the post.
The URI for the post here is: http://tedernst.com/wp/?p=318 while the trackback URI is: http://tedernst.com/wp/wp-trackback.php?p=318
I have changed my setup to allow anyone commenting to see the trackback URI explicitly. You have your blog set up to hide it (it says “trackback URI”, I think).
I discovered all of this just by playing with it, not by asking at the Wordpress site.

i blogged a few entries on the bloglines blog… is trackback automated or manual in that case?

The bloglines blog? What’s that?
Comment by ted — January 8, 2006 #
do you use blogliines? if so, you can ctually blog there too… like other blog services. Much beter to have your own blog, like this. Which leads me to ask… why is this at sub-level/ wp, rather than top level? just a default of the install, or was there some thought behind that? There may be consequences :)

I do use bloglines. I didn’t know you could blog there.
Yes, I’m sure there are consequences. The top level would probably be better. I was hoping to use the index page for something more general. That doesn’t seem to be happening. I’m not sure if it’s within my technical skill to move it at this point and not break any inbound links. I may give it a try anyway, at some point. We’ll see.

Or follow up on your original inclination and do something terribly interesting with the index page :)
Comment by Tropology — January 12, 2006 #
Ha! That seems less and less likely. We’ll see. Hey, where’s your blog, by the way?
