Emerging Futures Foundation and Julie Caldwell

January 24, 2006 at 4:43 pm | In friends, links |

My good friend Julie Caldwell has a dormant blog for her Emerging Futures Foundation as well as a traditional main website. She’s working on helping people work together to do what they can’t do alone. I’m hoping this post encourages her to blog. :-)

This post is part of my ongoing links series, slowly replacing the blogroll in the sidebar.

    Dear servants of God.
While in Kasese, I met the Director of an orphanage/school who invited me to take the information given below.

Hope for vulnerable children ministry‘s School Report 14 Feb 2007
    Location
The school is located at fort portal high way near SBI international offices in Kasese District.
    Background
The school is with the main objective of catering for poor Orphans who have been left as a result of the “AIDS” Killer Disease and the previous war attacks of the Allied Democratic Force (ADF) who attacked the boarder and the whole part of the District of Kasese, who abducted, raped and killed many leaving most of the families having a burden of orphans.
On the side of “AIDS” Killer Disease the sub county of Busongora south being near, foreigners travelers have infected and planted (HIV) “AIDS” and other many STDS diseases to the community leaving children Orphans at the boarder of Congo and near Queen Elizabeth national park.

    School problems
    1. We don’t have finances to run school activities e.g. like paying salaries for teaching staff and non teaching staff since we have not get sponsor/donors as yet.
    2. We don’t have land, we haven’t constructed any school building, renting is expensive for us, since we don’t have any means of getting funds.
    3. We need some training facilities like computers. Technical tools like sewing machines, building tools such that students who fail to go for further studies can acquire a skill and earn a living.
    4. We need a school hostel, since we have a plan of making the school boarding. Since other children are homeless they have no where to go and stay.
    5. The Orphans have no shoes, bags, Uniform and so many scholastic materials.
    6. The school has no means of transport that could monitor/supervise the project properly.
    7. Looking at the Environment around the school there is a great burden to help, each Orphan to get a friend/donor that would assist in paying school fees.
    Future Prospect/Plans
    1. We intend to feed all the 360 (three hundred sixty children) breakfast and lunch since most of orphans come from far distances.
    2. We intend to buy a school land and build 7 class room block an office, a hostel and ordaining hall.
    3. We intend to buy 5 acres of land, for growing cotton to enable the project prospers and earn during cotton season.
    4. We intend to buy Hens for poultry farm and cows for the progress of the project and the children feeding

VOICE OF STREET CHILDREN WHY ARE CHILDREN ON THE STREET

    - Horrors of previous wars and insurgence in conflict areas.
    - Separated families and child abandonment
    - Loss of parents guardians, close relative. Poverty and deprivation of basic survival needs
    - Increased pressure on parents and children to earn a living
    - Lack of positive parenting and a caring community
    - Discrimination, insecurity, physical, mental, sexual abuse and child labour at the hand of their family community and society.
    - An inadequate system for child protection, welfare and family guidance.
    - These children share the left over with dogs, cats, flies and the long beaked karoli
    - They have no home to turn to mother or father to care. There is no where they can lay their heads when night falls.
    - When it rains they are soaked like a boat
    - Police always beat them along the street ruthlessly.
    - Their wounds attract no sympathy
    - They are rejected and lonely
    - They are insure ob streets around the town

    ANSWER
We can’t ignore the plight of the street children any more. Its time to accept our responsibility as a caring community and work to make a positive change in the lives of street children. Each one of us has a role to play.

    CHALLENGES ON THE STREET
    - Lack of food
    - Lack of shelter
    - Lack of clothing
    - Lack of education
    - Living in fear
    - Lack of friends and relatives
    - Lack of medical care
    - No love and care
    - Exploitation
    - Conflict with law enforcers
    - Sexual abuse and defilement
    - Begging around streets
    - Abuse from community.

Today the very past pace of HIV/AIDS scourge has ushered in trauma, stigma leaving many people, especially the elderly breaking down with stress and pressure of the increasing burden of proving for their children, relative and other dependants orphaned by HIV/AIDS. As a church we have taken a responsibility to care and look after an orphan.
