CC for WP problem update

August 22, 2005 at 8:23 am | In the Commons, admin | Comments Off

Sure enough, my post showed up as a trackback and Nathan replied (on his blog which then showed up as trackback to my post):

WordPress provides a “footer” hook which wpLicense uses, but in order for it to be called, your template must include a call to wp_footer();, probably in footer.php. The default theme, Kubrick, does that, so you might look at it’s footer.php for a sample.

He also said there was no link to register in order to leave a comment here. This is a reminder to myself to look into that. Might also be a theme issue.

Update: I found the tag in question in the Kubrick footer and copied it over and it worked! Just like that. Still have to figure out the comment issue.

Update: Took the comments template from the default theme and just copied over the comments template from Minima Plus. Solved the issue of not being able to register. Now the formatting is all funky. Guess I’m going to have to delve into the actual code.

Update: Seems it just had to do with the width of the comment-entry box so I changed it from 100% to 40 columns and now everything looks okay. Woo hoo!

Creative Commons for Wordpress problem

August 22, 2005 at 1:10 am | In the Commons, admin | 2 Comments

Just downloaded and installed the wordpress plugin wplicense that’s supposed to display a link to my Creative Commons license in the footer. Doesn’t seem to work. Not sure how to get tech support so hoping my link to them will attract their attention and response. The plug-in works fine, activated on the plugin menu, then shows up an additional option on the options menu. I picked my license. All looks well there. Just don’t see the output I’d like.

theme update

I mentioned earlier that was checking out themes. I’ve changed again. This time to Minima Plus by Theron Parlin. This gives me the dropdowns in the sidebar that I wanted. I’m going to start learning how to customize it now. You might not even recognize it by the time you read this.

import success

Thanks to Michael, Andy and Catsutorials, I managed to get all my old posts imported. Makes for some strange posts because I was winding down at the old place at the same time as gearing up over here. From here on out, however, it should smooth itself out. Woo hoo! Time for bed!

playing with themes

August 21, 2005 at 1:12 am | In admin | 1 Comment

“Themes” is the name wordpress gives to the look of a site. Notice that all of my data is the same as it was before I switched themes, but everything is formatted differently. I like this one better in some ways. I lost some of my sidebar information. Maybe I’ll need to learn how to customize these things. I’d also prefer to have a dropdown box for my sidebar stuff. I’d like categories to be that way (once I have categories, which I don’t yet). Anyway, learning, learning. :-) This them is called Shaded Grey by Sadish Balasubramanian

Please see http://tedernst.com and update your blogrolls. All existing inbound links to specific posts here will still work indefinitely.

automatic linking forward within my blog

Just learned something cool about wordpress. I wrote a post last week about learning Ruby. Then a wrote a post about setting up a web server on my machine and I linked to that post about Ruby. Here’s the cool thing. The post about Ruby (earlier in time) now has a comment (trackback, really) on it pointing to the later post about the web server. With my old blog I had to send a trackback ping manually and I never thought to do it when I referred to myself. Seems very useful this way. Cool. Now both of those earlier posts will have a link to this one so if somone happens along my earlier posts without seeing this one, they can follow my train of thought. Cool.
